You can do 5 x 5 with a single light shaft in the middle of it. I make them underground all the time. Usually put 2 in a row so I have a 5x10 garden. More than enough for me solo. This was 5x15, but same concept.

Usually I build my workstation base underground with the ceiling a few blocks below the rock layer and put a field of spikes above it. They just kill themselves on the spikes. Go out and repair some once in awhile.

The Pro's of the Sledgehammer are because of the perks. It gets an AOE knockdown as you put points into the perk. The only weapon that can crowd control a group of zombies running at your face. It's pretty fantastic to power swing and see multiple zeds flop. :)
