I found this tutorial as well. The process worked for me.  

I want a map that has a large wasteland but am not having any luck generating one or getting a seed to work that looks good. It always comes out different even if I copy all the advanced settings and name as they are shown. TIA

What difficulty level are you starting at? I have found if you start at Warrior then dogs are more likely to gank you day 2ish. Starting on adventurer it does not happen. I start on adventurer and crank the difficulty one level at a time every 7 days till I get to warrior. 

Nice to hear. I am hoping the junk sledge works out to being something useful at least early game. 

+1 I hate being stopped by yucca plants, cacti, twigs and anything that is similarly easy to demolish. If would be nice if the bike could plow though those for a durability penalty.
