PC V2.0 Storms Brewing Dev Diary

Looking forward to it! From hosting point of view, do you know if there are many serverconfig.xml changes we'll need to add / remove?
I only see 2 changes. These were added:

<property name="CameraRestrictionMode" value="0"/> <!-- 0 = Players can freely swap between first and third person camera modes, 1 = Restricted to first person, 2 = Restricted to third person -->

<property name="AISmellMode" value="3"/> <!-- 0-5 (off, walk, jog, run, sprint, nightmare) -->

I do wounder how the smell mode will be with sprint. I do wonderwhat default will be. .

Im most excitedly for smell

Hello @faatal

Are there any features you are working on right now that still needs lots of work, or are you really close to being done with most of them?

@faatal The Smell option is accessible in Settings, right?
Nothing big.

Today made some additions we needed to allow world/player torches and burning barrels to apply the warm buff. Optimized how it works. As a bonus, storage containers can apply buffs, with my test being those barrels with that symbol on the side. ;)

Also fixed the light priority system for smooth brightness/range updates being broken.

My largest one is destroy area as I have unfinished changes on top of previous committed changes and one more improvement idea after that. Hoping that is sorted out tomorrow, so I can test a build over the weekend.

Yes. Only being a server config setting would be lame.

What if the zombie apocalypse hit in 2013 and decimated a huge number of the population and caused nukes to be dropped but there were enough people who remained that they built back up a slanted version of the old world with weirdly named businesses. For 20 years things started coming back but then a second apocalypse hit in the form of a civil war in which everyone out of fear of the violence barricaded their homes and remained indoors hiding and stockpiling weapons and food. During the course of this conflict many ended up dying and turning which brought the zombie population back up again. When we start the game it is 2034 just barely after the civil war which resulted in Noah and the Duke unable to defeat each other but each holding their own territories and most of the population decimated and turned into zombies again some wandering outside but a lot still inside buildings that were barricaded for war.

Some things are long decayed since the original viral apocalypse but other things are just newly damaged and destroyed and many of the casualties of the war are newly turned zombies.

I'm throwing this theory in the hat.
i dunno. sounds like a story to me...
keep it real man

Any update on if there will ever be real rivers in random gen?
no
the water would short out the motherboard

Legend, thank you for checking on that for me!

Okay so I've read Roland's run down on how the new jars are working where they disappear after you eat them and I can already tell you that the people you are appealing to with that change probably aren't going to be happy with that half measure. If the fun pimps are so dedicated to not cluttering the player inventory with those jars why do you they not just cut out jars entirely and just give us a way to collect water from a river without the jars?

I know the community has asked for jars but wouldn't just pressing E on a river to get a murky water in your inventory ultimately solve both the community's concerns and the devs concerns. The devs say they want water to be abstracted so there's no messing with jars. The community wants the immersion of being able to collect water from an obvious viable water source.

The key problem with that is that without jars we would have essentially infinite water (which is a problem of the setting, post-zombie arizona covered in natural rivers isn't a water scarcity setting despite Joel's insistence that it somehow would and should be on reddit)

Personally I think they should go full jars or just go full no-jars and accept that the setting just doesn't make water hard to obtain. (Or they could provide reasons the rivers are not viable for water. Waterborne infection being the obvious one)

That said, I do think that adding jars as they are said to be in 2.5 is still a vast improvement over what we have in 2.4 but I fear it's just kicking the empty can (removed A21 RIP) down the road and we're gonna be having the "Can my character stop recreating old internet videos with their jars every time they drink water?" in 6 months.

Maybe not have them disappear after you drink from them but just remove the ability to make them. Once you find a jar it is reusable for entire game. Hopefully you won't be overflowing with them at least until late(r) game. By then you should be set up with everything. Fuel production, ammo production, etc. Jars, drinkable water, teas should be rare enough you are not swimming in them but scattered enough you are not dying constantly from thirst.

I think them being not craftable or at least gated by a something like a crusable

Throw in only able to scope up water vs just finding murky water jars and boom.

Really? My rundown? I haven’t given a rundown and even explained that there has been no full reveal of how thirst and empty jars is going to work after Adam jumped to some conclusions when he found out jars would be consumed. All that has been revealed is that empty jars can be found in loot and the jar is used up when you consume a drink. Other than that there is a bunch of speculation and assumption by non-TFP staff that will likely be repeated as facts to a willing audience by….well, you.

and I can already tell you that the people you are appealing to with that change probably aren't going to be happy with that half measure.
And you’ll make sure things get influenced that direction as much as you’re reach extends….eh?

Feedback is what experimental is for— so hopefully people will give constructive feedback once they have a chance to play experimental. Be sure to encourage constructive and respectful discourse when you send them on over.

Will we be able to craft burning barrels as hobo version of campfire? It was a feature in the earlier alphas, also it makes sense to use some empty barrel or it section to build a reliable cooking station or fireplace.

I can understand the game balance to sort of make character consume glass jar (though in earlier alphas jars could be reused as many times as possible) but making glass break mechanics as well as metal flask or other alternatives to store water could be more diversifying mechanics rather than limiting it to single use of a found jar. I think that having more options and mechanics rather than trying to cut or completely rework features will be a good idea.

...Your explanation of how the jars worked from your testing then? You explained to us how the jars will go away after use which is what I was referencing. Anyway,

Are you suggesting that I'm some puppet master warping the minds of the community against 7dtd? That sentiment is going to age very poorly in the next 7 days and you'll see why shortly. Hell, maybe word will make it through the grapevine to you and you'll see why before it happens. Regardless, You're MASSIVELY overestimating my community influence lmao, I have 77k subscribers not 1 million.

encourage constructive and respectful discourse when you send them on over.
I'm not entirely sure what you think you're getting at here? Are you suggesting that I send anyone to this place for anything? Because I do not. It's the complete inverse of the subreddit, where that place is a â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  against the devs, this place is just a â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  FOR the devs. And my comments are a â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  for me and my opinions. I highly doubt there's significant leakage between the three... leakage was a poor word choice.
Sounds like you’re already writing your script….
Um yeah I actually wrote a script that was playing devils advocate for the jars change which was related to the post you were responding to actually.
