PC Backpack vanished on death

This bug doesnt repeat more often than not (3 times out of the 10+ of recreation attempts) and its difficult to pinpoint what happens but maybe who understands the sequence of events may decide to put some sort of guard against it happening.

Basicly i was experimenting with load bearing and the difference between glued from one side and glued from 2 sides to work out how much it increases.

The first attempt i died instantly on the collapse and when i respawned i had no backpack radar marker or map marker and when i went back to the exact spot it was not there.

I tried repeating exactly the same thing but the backpack spawned as it should and gave up and exited the game and viewed the capture to see if i could get any clues.

Couldnt really find any pattern and restarted the same game save and tried to recreate what had happened and once again first attempt i respawned without a backpack markers or a backpack being there.

I quit out again and viewed the footage and after that i restarted the save again but backpack marker behaved as it should on respawn every time so i quit and restarted and once again first attempt i respawned with no marker or backpack.

I not sure if its got to happen in your first death from a brand new session, i did think the destruction of frames and/or spawning of rubble was destroying or preventing the backpack from spawning but a couple of times that the markers worked when i went back i did find the backpack inside the block of rubble and underneath where it wasnt viewable until you smashed the block.

But looking at the video from the 2nd time it happened it seems the backpack is spawned and destroyed at the time a frame destructs if that makes sense.

It is possible for the backpack to be destroyed because it rolls downhill or something collapses on it. I've lost few that way.

 
I went overboard with testing it and a simple collapse of a frame over a backpack would have told me it was that doing it lol.

I am guessing its well known by the routine playerbase and accepted as something that sometimes happens, i should have realised that and asked a question in gen support.

I take it its a infrequent event and suppose it is a design choice that it can be destroyed, not sure how i feel if TFP extend that and introduce backpack degrading over time or from damage but i am a believer in the player evolving with the game.

I know i might seem pedantic and proberly am to some extent of my recent bug reports.

Believe or not i just like the game and just want to help a little where i can.

But in light of this i going to put more thought and research nextime i post.

 
Don't worry about it - I only found out about it the hard way but I've seen others post with similar problems.

I'm not sure, but I think the backpack does disappear after so long - hopefully someone can confirm that either way.

 
Sorry i was a little vague when talking about it having health or timer i was thinking about when its actually on your character while your alive which i have heard some talk about on the PC forums to balance increasing the size,

I think the main reason if a timer is used is for garbage collection of the backpack entity being that if you dont get to it in time limit that it can be removed from the world.

Most people know it destructs when emptied and if you die getting to a backpack you can still pick up both the latest one with the marker and the original one you lost if you can remember the location and can spot it, if backpack destructed when a new instance of a backpack was spawned this wouldnt be possible and more annoying than difficult in my opinon.

I've found an old backpack a month later in game, 2 hour days

I also remember someone testing how many backpacks you could leave on the ground before them being destroyed and it was 99+

Wow - my missing backpack must just have been destroyed then. Has been a long time since I've had that problem though.

After reading a comment someone posted in gen support for pc i got nosey and checked the xml for pc and it was right what they said being a time value set to 1200 seconds (20 mins) i know its possible console may have a different value but i think your month old mouldy backpack might have been a bug or maybe it was a stage in development when they didnt destruct them for GC.

I am only speculating but current console version i would have thought the backpack has the same TimeStayAfterDeath value but maybe wrong.

Dont worry i will leave the configs out of future discussion and reports from now on because this is the console section and not PC.

Interesting. This way waaaay back in our early winter last year this happened. I do know it's definitely more then 20 min though. Consoles last way longer then that. I've lazily waited days to get a backpack before.

Is the consensus now that because of the areas you lost your pack in etc, it's possible the backpack was crushed by falling items or got damaged?

I love when people report bugs, it helps out a lot, so if the odd bug is reported before or working as intended, I really don't mind. You're always extremely helpful in your reports, and other reports from players so please do not worry about posting your take on things.

I may be wrong but i dont think the backpack entity has a set value of health it may inherit a default value but i would of thought that was out of the realms of damage from collison or items like mines.

I couldnt destroy by mine or dynamite but it does vanish sometimes if blow a big hole in the ground this could be the same case when ragdolling on death down a steep gradiant.

At a guess the main cause of it vanishing before TimeStayAfterDeath value has run out is debris from a collapse or explosion is spawned in the same block space as the backpack and is destructed.

Its not a 100% defined rule as you can cause a block to collapse on top of the backpack and it not to vanish and also it can be inside or underneath the debris so i wouldnt say it can be crushed.

Dont think its a major issue was just more interested if it was undefined behavior or game mechanic but it seems like undefined behavior to me.

 
Hmm, I shall ask the team to clarify what the parameters of the backpack once it is dropped so we can clarify if it is an issue or not.

 
So I died going into a vault going for a gunsafe.

The floor was full of mines.

Then I thought that this would be a good time to get some food.

When I came back my backpack was missing and there was no icon.

Is this also due to the timer or is there a chance my stuff could be inside the concrete blocks?

Thanks for the report,

Is it possible your backpack may have been destroyed in the explosion of the mine, have you had any luck searching inside the blocks surrounding the area your backpack disappeared in?
