Upgradable item tiers

I don't know how items are coded, so I don't know how feasible of an ask this is, but I really wish item tiers could be upgraded.

For example, I gain the ability to make a T1 .44 Magnum. Yay, it costs 40 steel which is probably more than I have at the time and need to go on a steel-hunting trip to fetch more, but it is worth it.

Now I gain a another level in handguns and can make a T2 .44 Magnum. Ok... but there is no way I am sinking another 50 steel into replacing my T1, especially since I probably have barely acquired any more steel since crafting the T1.

This is how it goes with almost every item above stone quality items. The costs to make replacement tools and weapons at a higher tier is so prohibitive that I usually only make T1s and skip the later tiers until reaching the next higher quality item.

So what I am asking for is the ability to upgrade a T1 .44 Magnum into a T2 by paying the difference in material costs:
Craft a T1 = 7 parts, 40 steel, 7 tape, 13 springs
Craft a T2 = 8 parts, 50 steel, 8 tape, 15 springs
Upgrade T1 to T2 = 1 part, 10 steel, 1 tape, 2 springs

I'd be fine with certain additional limitations on this too, like having to repair the lower tier item to perfect durability before being able to upgrade it, or needing to know one tier above what I can upgrade to (e.g. need to know T3 .44 Magnum to upgrade T1 to T2).

I just really hate that I ignore the majority of item tiers because the costs to make completely new items each time is way too expensive.

Yeah, it's quite wonky; not worth upgrading anything for the most part. Handguns are the worst for me, I'll make a Q5/6 pistol, skip magnums entirely, make a Q6 SMG and a Q6 Dulture; and I still won't have the parts for the latter two, in time. (Although I think the part costs were reduced recently, not sure which side of that I last made them..)

An upgrade system would be an improvement, but I don't think the recipe system supports ingredient quality atm; so it's not a trivial addition.

This mechanic was in A16 (for firearm only) u could collect various gun parts of different quallity and boost ur gun quallity by using higher quallity parts! As i heard - it will come back after smell/jar update

I like the way it is... it's part of the process.
You have to make choices: do/can I put another 50 steel to craft the next tier with little gain or do I wait later for a better one?

If it was easy to "upgrade" your gear it would remove from the game some decision making that I personally like. 🥴
